You can outpace middle-age spread
What if you eat as healthy a diet as you did all your life, you exercise faithfully, but at age 45 or beyond, you have gained 10 or 20 pounds?
Blame it on nature. As you age, your body's metabolism decreases, so you burn fewer calories. If your spare tire adds much more than 10 pounds, you will want to consume fewer calories. The decrease in metabolic rate translates to a need for about 100 fewer calories a day with each passing decade. But eating 300 or 400 calories less each day (and still getting proper nutrition) is easier said than done.
Exercise helps, but the need for that increases as well. If at age 18, a man jogged four times a week, 3 miles at a stretch, by his late 40s he would have to run 54 miles a week to keep the scale at the same point.
Enter strength training. One reason metabolism slows as we age is because we lose muscle, which burns far more calories than body fat. But strength training helps to counteract the muscle-losing tendency and can increase metabolism by as much as 10 percent to 15 percent. It consists of weight lifting and/or working on resistance machines.
Running and aerobic activities help maintain muscle mass, but not to the same extent as strength training. The big benefit of aerobic exercise is that it helps keep the heart and cardiovascular system conditioned.
Just two to three strength training sessions a week, for about 40 minutes each session, is all you need. Use free weights or other equipment at home or at a health club.
